Behind the scenes

About 3,000 commits in four and a half months: what one engineer and a team of AI agents shipped

By Tim Thomas · 2026-10-16

Between 1 June and 15 October 2026, Tim Thomas and the AI agents he directs made 2,976 commits across 48 software projects. That is one senior engineer, not a team. Here is what that looks like in practice, and what the number does and does not mean.

First, what a commit is

A commit is a saved change to a project's code, with a note saying what changed. It measures activity, not value: a typo fix and a new feature both count as one. We use the number because it is real and easy to check, not because it proves anything on its own. The work below is the point.

What got built

  • Tournamental, a live World Cup prediction game: 869 commits in seven weeks, with brackets, syndicates, leaderboards and picks time-stamped before kickoff. Its production data recorded 208 players, 163 brackets and 22 syndicates.
  • FM.video, rebuilt from the ground up after the product we inherited had died, then taken international, given a TV app, a music quiz and Sign in with WhatsApp, and wired to a reel factory that posts its own social video.
  • This website, moved off a 2013-era DNN platform: version one rebuilt and staged in a single day with 65 pages and every old address redirected.
  • Three quiz games in one day, including GeoFun, a multiplayer geography quiz later load tested at 1,000 concurrent players on 138 MB of memory.
  • Genkan, a self-hosted family internet gateway where kids earn screen time by learning.
  • getaiva.ai launched, and Aiva for WooCommerce went from version 0.1 to 0.2.0 in a day.
  • A coffee marketplace on WooCommerce with 28 roasters and about 500 products, built in a day.
  • The Studio, an AI music and video production pipeline, with 173 commits in its first 18 days.
  • Client work: a WooCommerce B2B store with ERP integration for RBS, a members app and ballot system for NZALPA, Shopify promotions that start and end on their own for Space General, a referral form rebuilt for MoveMe Health, WordPress work for Rialto Channel, security reviews, and tests added to five live systems that had none.

The system behind it

None of this is one person typing faster. It is one person directing a team of AI agents, each working in its own copy of the code, all reading from and writing to a shared knowledge base we call the Hivemind. That knowledge base reached 382 notes and 62 recorded decisions in its first two months. The agents build, test and document; Tim decides what to build, reviews the work and signs off anything that faces a customer.

It has not been smooth. There were outages, agents that collided on the same task, and a hardware failure in October. Each one produced a new rule, a new check or a new safeguard, and all of them are written down.
